Day 108/365: Rick Wakeman “Catherine Parr” from The Six Wives of Henry VIII

The Song of the Day (SOTD) closes out Wakeman’s second solo studio release. It is probably my favorite solo album from the artist. The closing tune about the one surviving wife of King Henry VIII – is an up-tempo piece with some thrilling keyboard leads. Some are seriously head-spinning.

Wakeman does a great job without doing too much cajoling moving the song through a variety of interesting movements. (Who doesn’t dig chimes?). I really appreciate the variety and uniqueness of this progressive instrumental.

Supporting Wakeman are:

  • Drum: Alan White (Yes, John Lennon, George Harrison, Circa)
  • Bass: Dave Wintour (If, Roger Daltrey, Stealers Wheel, Pretty Things)
  • Guitar: Mike Egan (Elton John, Nicky Hopkins)
  • Percussion: Frank Ricotti (Bryan Ferry, Paul Carrack, Gerry Raferty, Mark Knopfler)

Impressive. Pleasant. Organ Drenched. Mellotron beauty. Keyboard heaven.
